Churchland

Paul Churchland (* 21. Oktober 1942) und seine Gattin Patricia Churchland (* 16. Juli 1943 in Oliver, British Columbia) sind kanadische Philosophen, die hauptsächlich auf dem Gebiet der Philosophie des Geistes und der Neurophilosophie und Neuroethik an der University of California tätig sind bzw. waren.

Beide gelten als Protagonisten des eliminativen Materialismus, der davon ausgeht, dass es es so etwas wie die mit neurowissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen nicht vereinbaren mentale Zustände gar nicht gäbe und künftig restlos mittels einer entsprechende neurowissenschaftliche Terminologie auf neuronale Zustände zurückgeführt werden könnten. Ähnlich seien in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte schon andere unbrauchbare Begriffe, etwa der Phlogiston-Begriff, eliminiert worden.
